The French consulate does not decide visa applications on vibes. Every document you submit answers a specific question the consulate officer is required to ask. Knowing why each document is required makes it much easier to substitute, supplement, or strengthen your application when your personal circumstances don't fit the standard template.

This guide covers the universal documents required for all France Schengen short-stay applications, then the additional documents for each trip purpose.

Universal Documents (All Applicants)

These items are required regardless of your reason for visiting France:

1. Valid Passport

  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • Valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
  • At least 2 blank pages (for the visa sticker and any border stamps)
  • If you have previous passports showing Schengen travel history, bring those too — they help demonstrate your travel record

Why it matters: The passport is your primary identity document and the physical carrier for the visa sticker. An expired or near-expiring passport will result in automatic refusal.

2. Completed Application Form

Generated from france-visas.gouv.fr after completing your online application. You must print and sign this form — it cannot be submitted digitally at TLScontact.

3. Passport Photos (×2)

Two recent (within 6 months), 35×45mm, ICAO-compliant photos. For full specifications, see our France visa photo requirements guide.

4. France-Visas Application Fee Receipt

Proof of payment of the €80 consulate fee, downloaded from the france-visas.gouv.fr portal after payment.

5. Travel Medical Insurance

  • Minimum €30,000 medical coverage
  • Valid for all Schengen states (not just France)
  • Covers the full duration of your trip — from entry date to departure date
  • Issued by an EU/UK-authorised insurer

The insurance certificate must explicitly state the coverage amount, the covered territory, and the validity dates. A summary page without these details will be rejected. For full requirements and compliant insurers, see our France visa insurance guide.

6. Proof of Accommodation

Options include:

  • Hotel booking confirmations (pre-paid or with flexible cancellation — the consulate does not require you to have paid, only to show a booking)
  • Rental agreement (Airbnb, private rental, serviced apartment)
  • Host invitation letter if staying with family or friends in France (see below under Family Visit documents)

7. Evidence of Financial Sufficiency

The consulate applies a rule of thumb for daily living costs. The guidance from the French consulate suggests approximately €65 per day as a reference figure, though this varies by individual circumstances (accommodation already paid, business trip with employer covering costs, etc.).

Required documents:

  • Last 3 months of bank statements from your primary current account
  • If self-employed or a business owner: business bank statements + last 2 years of tax returns
  • If retired: pension statements
  • Savings account statements showing a stable balance help if your current account shows variable income

Statements must show your name and account details. Printed from online banking is acceptable if clearly headed with bank branding. Bank-stamped physical statements are the gold standard.

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence for the duration of the intended stay and for their return to their country of residence.

8. Proof of Ties to the UK

This is the document category most often omitted by first-time applicants — and one of the most important. The consulate must be confident you will return to the UK after your trip. Evidence of ties includes:

  • Employment letter from your employer: confirms position, salary, and that you have approved leave
  • Payslips (last 2–3 months)
  • If self-employed: HMRC self-assessment, contracts, or evidence of ongoing work
  • Property ownership (mortgage statement or Land Registry document)
  • Family relationships in the UK (partner, children)
  • Evidence of financial obligations tying you to the UK

Students should provide university enrollment letters and proof of ongoing studies.

Tourism: Additional Documents

For holiday visits, add:

  • Return flight itinerary — a confirmed or provisional booking reference showing your entry and exit dates. A full ticket is not required; a flight reference is sufficient.
  • Holiday itinerary — a rough day-by-day plan of where you'll be. Does not need to be detailed; a list of cities and activities is fine.

Why it matters: The consulate verifies that your stated trip duration and the 90-day rule calculation align. An itinerary with no planned departure date is a flag.

Business: Additional Documents

For business visits (meetings, conferences, trade shows):

  • Invitation letter from the French business host — company letterhead, contact details, your name, the nature of the meeting, and dates
  • Proof of registration for any conference or trade event
  • Letter from your UK employer confirming the business purpose, authorising the trip, and stating that costs are covered
  • If self-employed: recent business documentation showing the France connection

Family Visit: Additional Documents

For visiting family or friends in France:

  • Signed invitation letter (attestation d'accueil) from your host — ideally notarised or certified by the local mairie (town hall), though a witnessed private letter is acceptable in most cases
  • Copy of host's valid ID — French national ID card or passport, or residence permit if the host is not a French national
  • Proof of host's accommodation — the host must show they have space for you (property deed, rental agreement, or utility bills in their name)
  • Evidence of your relationship — photos, correspondence history, or family tree documents for relatives

Children: Additional Documents

Children travelling on their own passport (all minors should have their own passport for Schengen travel) need:

  • Their own application, form, and photos
  • Both parents' consent (signed letter) if travelling without one or both parents
  • Proof of sole parental authority (court order or equivalent) if applicable
  • Birth certificate to establish the parent-child relationship

What Happens if a Document Is Missing at TLScontact

TLScontact staff conduct a completeness check at the start of your appointment. If a mandatory document is absent:

  • They may decline to accept your application and ask you to return with the missing item
  • You will lose your appointment slot and need to rebook
  • In peak season, a new appointment could be weeks away

Bring originals and copies of every document. Some items the consulate retains; having a copy ensures you can track what you submitted.
