Final-year international students with a business idea face a timing decision that got sharper in 2026. GOV.UK says the Graduate visa lasts 2 years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications on or after 1 January 2027. At the same time, students who have finished their course can now switch straight to the Innovator Founder visa from inside the UK.

So there are two broad paths: take the Graduate visa first and build the business, or go straight from Student to Innovator Founder. This guide sets out a planning sequence to help you choose, using only the published rules. It is a planning framework, not advice on your individual eligibility.

Step 1: Write down your key dates

Before weighing routes, list the dates that constrain you:

  • Course end date on your CAS. Caseworkers check this date when deciding whether you have completed your course, though they may accept earlier completion shown by evidence such as a results transcript.
  • Student visa expiry date. You need to apply before your permission ends; Home Office guidance requires applicants not to be in breach of immigration law, with only limited overstaying exceptions.
  • 31 December 2026. The last day to apply for a 2-year Graduate visa.
  • For PhD students: the date you reach 12 months of the PhD. That is the earliest point at which guidance allows a PhD student to switch.

Step 2: Check you are not in a barred category

Caseworker guidance lists routes that cannot switch to Innovator Founder in-country, including Short-term Student and Visitor. A standard Student visa holder who has completed the course is not barred. If you are on a short-term study route, you would need to apply from outside the UK. See who cannot switch to Innovator Founder for the full list.

Also check whether, in the 12 months before applying, you held a government or international scholarship covering both fees and living costs. If so, you will need the sponsor's written consent. We cover that in the scholarship sponsor consent rule.

Step 3: Score your business readiness honestly

Endorsing bodies assess whether a plan is innovative, viable and scalable, and whether you generated or significantly contributed to it. Ask yourself:

QuestionReadyNot yet
Can you explain who the customer is and why they would pay?Evidence from real conversationsAssumptions only
Is there a written business plan?Draft exists and has been testedNot started
Have you approached an endorsing body?Application in progressNo contact yet
Will you have a day-to-day role in the business?Clear operational roleMainly an investor or adviser

Guidance is clear that an applicant who is only investing will be refused, so the last row is not optional. If most answers sit in the "not yet" column, switching directly at the end of your course is unlikely to be realistic. A free assessment can help you see where the gaps are.

Step 4: Choose the path that fits your dates

Path A: Student straight to Innovator Founder. Suits students whose plan is mature and who can obtain an endorsement letter before student permission ends. It avoids a separate Graduate visa application. The risk is that if endorsement is delayed, you may run out of permission before you can apply.

Path B: Graduate visa first, then Innovator Founder. Suits students who need more time to validate and build. If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you get 2 years. From 1 January 2027 you get 18 months. Doctoral graduates get 3 years. The Graduate visa is not on the list of routes barred from switching to Innovator Founder.

Step 5: Budget for the switch

Whichever path you take, the Innovator Founder application has the same costs, based on GOV.UK figures checked in October 2026:

ItemAmount
Visa fee, inside the UK£1,693 per person
Immigration Health Surcharge£1,035 per adult per year
Endorsement fee (endorsing body)£1,000, excluding VAT
Contact point meetings£500 each, at least two, excluding VAT

You will also need to meet the financial requirement. Applicants who have been in the UK for more than 12 months at the date of application automatically meet it; otherwise you must show £1,270 held for a 28-day period. Students on a short course may be close to that 12-month line, so check your own dates rather than assuming.

Step 6: Work backwards from your expiry date

Build a simple reverse timeline:

  1. Take your current visa expiry date.
  2. Subtract a margin for the decision wait. GOV.UK says in-country decisions usually take 8 weeks, and a faster decision may be available for a fee.
  3. That gives you your latest safe application date.
  4. Your endorsement letter must be dated no more than 3 months before that application date, so plan for it to arrive inside that window.
  5. Before that, allow time for the endorsing body's own process, which has no official fixed timeline.

Timing your switch around the 3-month endorsement window goes into this in more detail.

Step 7: Prepare the rest of the application

Alongside the endorsement, gather:

  • proof you have completed your course, or 12 months of a PhD
  • evidence of English at CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening, unless exempt
  • your passport and biometrics appointment
  • if you have dependants, their documents and fees (each person pays the visa fee)
  • scholarship sponsor consent, if it applies to you

If something fixable is missing, such as the healthcare charge not paid for the full period, guidance says caseworkers normally write to let you fix it. Do not rely on that.

Key takeaways

  • Start with dates: CAS course end, visa expiry, 31 December 2026 and, for PhD students, the 12-month mark.
  • Students who have completed the course on their CAS can switch straight to Innovator Founder; the Graduate visa is optional.
  • If you need more time, a Graduate visa application on or before 31 December 2026 gets 2 years rather than 18 months.
  • Your endorsement letter must be dated within 3 months of your application, and in-country decisions usually take 8 weeks.
  • Budget £1,693 per person plus the healthcare surcharge and endorsing body fees.
