When a founder switches to Innovator Founder from inside the UK, the conversation usually centres on the endorsement and the business plan. For founders with a partner or children, there is a second application to plan: the family's.
Dependants are a large part of this route. Practitioner analysis of Home Office statistics for the year ending June 2026 reported that dependants made up 49% of out-of-country Innovator Founder visas issued. That is a reported figure, not an official percentage, but it shows how often this route is a family decision.
Who counts as a dependant
The caseworker guidance lists:
| Dependant | Key requirement |
|---|---|
| Spouse | Must meet Appendix Relationship with Partner |
| Civil partner | Must meet Appendix Relationship with Partner |
| Unmarried partner | Must meet Appendix Relationship with Partner |
| Dependent children | Must be dependent children of the main applicant |
Appendix Relationship with Partner sets out the detailed rules on what a qualifying relationship looks like. We do not reproduce them here; check the current Appendix on GOV.UK before you apply.
The financial requirement for families
This is where switching families most often need to think carefully.
The 12-month rule. Guidance says applicants who have been in the UK for more than 12 months at the date of application automatically meet the financial requirement. A founder switching after several years as a student may meet this. A partner or child who arrived more recently may not be in the same position. Check each person's dates rather than assuming the family is treated as one unit.
The 28-day funds. Where the 12-month rule is not met, funds must be held for a 28-day period:
| Person | Amount |
|---|---|
| Main applicant | £1,270 |
| Partner | £285 |
| First child | £315 |
| Each further child | £200 |
For example, a hypothetical family of a main applicant, a partner and two children, none of whom met the 12-month rule, would need £1,270 + £285 + £315 + £200 = £2,070 held for 28 days. The rules on what counts as held funds are in Appendix Finance. For more, see the financial requirement for dependants.
The per-person costs
Visa fees and the healthcare surcharge are charged per person, so family costs scale quickly.
| Cost | Amount (per GOV.UK, October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Visa fee, inside the UK | £1,693 per person |
| Visa fee, outside the UK | £1,357 per person |
| Healthcare surcharge, adults | £1,035 per year |
| Healthcare surcharge, children | Use the GOV.UK calculator |
For a 3-year grant, the adult healthcare surcharge alone is £3,105 per adult (3 × £1,035). Endorsing body fees (£1,000 endorsement plus £500 per contact point meeting, at least two, excluding VAT) relate to the main applicant's business, not to each dependant.
Timing a family switch
A few practical points when the whole family is switching in-country:
- Check each person's current permission. This article does not cover whether a dependant's own current category allows an in-country application. Confirm it for each person before you apply.
- Apply while everyone's permission is valid. Guidance requires applicants not to be in breach of immigration law, with limited overstaying exceptions.
- Watch the 3-month endorsement window. The main applicant's endorsement letter must be dated no more than 3 months before the application. If dependants apply separately, coordinate the dates. See switching timing and the 3-month window.
- Plan for eVisas. GOV.UK says successful applicants receive an eVisa and need a UKVI account. Make sure each family member can access proof of their status.
What dependants should know about the main applicant's conditions
Dependants apply on the basis of their relationship to the main applicant, so the main applicant's position matters to the whole household. The main applicant's endorsement can be withdrawn at any time, including after approval, and if the endorsing body withdraws support, the main applicant's permission can be cancelled to 60 days. How that would affect each dependant is a question to check with an adviser, and it is one more reason to keep the business on track and to keep your endorsing body informed.
The route does not allow access to most public funds. Plan the household budget on that basis.
Partners who want to co-found
If your partner wants to be a co-founder rather than a dependant, the guidance allows team members to share a business idea and plan, but each must get their own individual endorsement and meet all the requirements in their own right. That is a bigger commitment, with its own fees and endorsement, and it should be a deliberate choice. Our guide to dependants in year one covers life on the route once you are granted.

Key takeaways
- A spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner and dependent children can apply as dependants; partners must meet Appendix Relationship with Partner.
- Visa fees and the healthcare surcharge are per person: £1,693 in-country, £1,357 outside, and £1,035 per adult per year for healthcare.
- The 12-month rule automatically meets the financial requirement; otherwise hold £285 for a partner, £315 for the first child and £200 for each further child, on top of £1,270.
- Check each family member's current permission and dates individually.
- Dependants' permission depends on the main applicant's endorsement, so business progress matters to the whole family.
